The registration is open for the New England Quilt Seminars hosted by David Taylor Quilts.  I’m thrilled and look forward to this event so much!  12 students for 5 days to have lots of one on one time of instruction on English Paper Piecing and Applique’.  This will be awesome to really focus on improving the techniques used in the quilt.  We’ll get a huge start on the class project, Nana’s Garden Club.  This quilt has a big block center with EPP and Applique.  I love teaching Starch Basting and helping students achieve excellent results.  It’s so rewarding to see the excitement of a student when they have success using the techniques I love.  ❤️  These techniques help make fancy quilts go together wonderfully!

Old School BOM- Basting EPP with Starch!

I’m thrilled to be involved in this Old School BOM project!  It’s always so good to learn some basics for quilting, as well as something new!  Thanks to Kim for including me and giving me the opportunity to show you all something “old school” done in a new way.   We'll be making an old school Hexie block with a fussy cut center.

When I started quilting one of the first quilts I wanted to make was a quilt with hexagon blocks.  I have an old quilt my Memaw made in the 30’s and it is one of my favorite antiques for sure.  Generally, Hexagon quilts are made using traditional hand piecing or the English Paper Piecing method.  The English Paper Piecing method is what interested me.  (EPP).  This means the quilter has a hexagon shape made from thick paper.  It is positioned on the wrong side of the fabric and the seam allowances are folded over the paper and basted in place.  I tried to baste hexie after hexie but I just couldn’t hold that paper still enough to have a good shape in the end.  The paper would shift and move at each turn and before long, I had no seam allowance left to turn over the paper!  No matter which tricks I used, I could not do a good job!

Years later I was preparing some applique’ shapes using freezer paper and starch and it dawned on me that perhaps this would work for basting EPP shapes.  It worked like a charm, but after a while, I realized I needed some tools (notions) that were not available.  My husband encouraged me to start designing what I needed and we now have a line of EPP and Applique' notions for Starch Basting.  I've got a few videos on my website that tell you all about the technique and notions, and shows you just how to use them.  Take a look HERE and after watching you'll be ready to begin the block.  Try to watch the second video listed (from your PC or Android device) as it is the most recent.  If you don't have a PC,  you can watch the first video loaded.  The rest are nice to watch too!

The basics of this technique are:

1-Make the hexie template from a double layer of freezer paper.

2-Cut fabric 1/4" larger on all sides of the hexie.

3-Iron the template to the wrong side of the fabric.

4-Paint the seam allowance with starch.

5-Fold the seam allowance onto the template and iron until dry with a mini iron.

6-Let the hexie cool and remove the template.  Repeat, repeat, repeat!

7-Sew the hexies together...YAY!

When you finish getting educated on this method from the videos, download the PDF file HERE .  You'll need to complete the checkout process, but don't worry, I will not ask for your credit card info or spam you!  This is just the way my website requires you to get the download.  Upon checkout completion a Purchase Confirmation box will pop up and you can get the download DIRECTLY FROM THIS BOX.  That's the easiest way to find the link.  😊 An email will also be sent with the link to get the download.

You can make the hexie with a fussy cut center as shown above, or if you'd rather have a block full of hexies, you'll need to make a few more and fill the center as shown below.  I can't wait to see how you make your block with your fabrics when you post in the Old School BOM FB Group!  Have fun and please let me know if you have any questions by asking in the FB group or by sending me an email through the comment form on the website, TraditionalPrimitives.com.

These blocks shown here are from a few of my fabric collections with Blank Quilting Corp- The hexies in the first picture are from my current collection, Abby's Treasures- in stores now!  The center and background in the first picture are from my next line, Ashton Collection, shipping to stores in October.  Be sure to tell your local shop to get this one ordered in time!  It has some wonderful prints and border prints!  The center in the second picture is from previous lines, Rustic Homestead and Ginger & Spice.  See more on my website on the Fabrics and Woolen Page as I still have some prints from these past collections available.

Join the  Old School BOM | Facebook FB group and join the fun to learn the basics of quilting! Here is a list of the participating designers sharing our lessons, tips and tricks.

Academy of Applique’ 2021

Hello Everyone!  I’ve just returned from teaching at the Academy of Applique’ held in Williamsburg, VA.  It was SOOOO nice to see people in person (with masks) and see the smiles in their eyes.  I absolutely love teaching and to teach at the Academy is such an honor!  I always tell my students I hope I can teach them something and love seeing them get excited about creating quilts using the methods I prefer and teach.  I’ve heard from several students who have finished all the Hexies for the center and are on their way to prepping the rest of the elements for the center.

The class project was Nana’s Garden Club, a quilt inspired by my Mom and Memaw who loved being members of their local garden clubs in Mississippi and Georgia.  I remember my Mom being so excited to enter contests of decorating the front door.  One year she wrapped the door in gold wrapping paper with a huge ribbon and then added a beautiful winter wreath. She saved that paper and ribbon and we had gifts given for several years with that paper.  Memaw had several gardening books that I received from my mom once I started enjoying having a flower garden.  I cherish it!  I am so blessed to see her handwritten notes in that book.  Anyway, the quilt is filled with memories of my Mom and Memaw as I remembered them when I stitched.  Isn’t it wonderful how our quilts are filled with memories!

Along with those memories, Nana’s Garden Club is filled with whimsical flowers and a few hexies as accents.

This quilt was a joy to create!  Our new product, Ultimate Freezer Paper is an absolute game changer for quick starch prep for applique’ shapes.  Due to the wonderful stiffness when two sheets are used together, along with the mini iron and Premium Quilting Starch, the Fingertip Stiletto, which allows you to get your finger right up close to the iron without getting burned and the Starch Brush which gives you just the right amount of starch on the seam allowances, you get quick and precise results on any shape easily!  These tools make preparing appliqué and English Paper Piecing shapes a real joy.  Then once they are completed, the sewing part goes lickity split!  The pattern walks you through the process as well as gives you a lesson on drawing a big circle and setting those hexies in place on the border easily.  The pattern is now available on the home page of the website, TraditionalPrimitives.com.  While you are ordering the pattern or kit, be sure to also choose the supplies suggested to make the process easy and quick.  It all makes a huge difference in the enjoyment and success while making quilts!

                                                       .

We have kits available for you and remember the pattern is free when you buy the kits for most all of my designs!  You can add on the preprinted and doubled template pages.  These pages are ready for you to cut and begin!  There is also an option for purchasing the precut hexies needed for the quilt.  There are lots of options to make everyone happy and get you going on this quilt!

As soon as I returned from the Academy of Applique, we had a visit from all the kids and grandkids.  We have 3 grands now and boy oh boy are they fun!  Paxton is quickly becoming a little boy.  Kenzie is almost a year old now, beginning to walk and talk, and Julian is on his way to being 2 months old!  We found a moment to get a quick pic of the three of them together!  Once Kenzie discovered Julian’s mouth we couldn’t keep her finger out of there!  Haha!  Oh the fun they will have together in the future... Of course I love it when all my girls come home.  I’m so proud of each of them as they grow up.  They love finding time to be together and make great efforts now that they all live in different parts of the country.  ❤️❤️❤️

Gettin' Creative!

Getting Creative!

Posted by Missie Carpenter on Sep 20th 2020

A while back showed you my latest fabric line, Barn Dance.  It’s been so much fun making quilts with this fabric!  Very soon, I can show you, but for now, it must remain a secret!  Barn Dance is out in stores now so please check your local fabric shop for yardage.   The next line to be released in December is Abby’s Treasures and I was lucky enough to get some strike offs to create something very special.  Before I show this to you up close and personal, I’ll tell you a bit about how Abby’s Treasures came to be...

I’ve always been drawn to reproduction fabrics.  I love my colors and I’m sticking to them!  There have been times I’ve ventured out of my “Palette” for a special project now and then, but I always come back to the reproduction tones.  Rich, deep earthy colors speak to me and bring out the best in my designs.  They are always like a gift when I dig in and start choosing fabrics for a new design.  My collections with Blank Quilting Corporation are just what I need when I start creating...a full range of lovely color and texture!  This collection is available in fat quarter bundles...what a sweet gift indeed. :-}

Many times, people will ask what inspires the fabrics I create.  Each line has been inspired by different experiences in my life, but Abby’s Treasures was inspired by antique quilts.  I have a small collection and in recent years, I am really learning to appreciate fabrics from the past.  I’ve always been attracted to fabrics and textiles, but lately I’ve been very interested in dating fabrics and learning about how they were printed, and about the women who made quilts in the past.  I am amazed at how they made quilts without modern tools we have today!  We are spoiled! A good thing I must say!

My Dad made me a tall quilt ladder a few years ago and I love it so much. It is always covered with quilts and it’s my favorite way to display antiques. Many times I am drawn to that corner and find myself studying fabrics. Such beauty in the simple, and sometimes very complex shapes.

As I study the simple antique quilts I own, certain fabrics jump out at me and become favorites. I love quilts from the mid 1800’s with their tiny, busy prints...just my style! I am drawn to quilts that have LOTS of different fabrics in them.  I started snapping pictures of my favorites and started a picture collection to use for design inspiration for Abby’s Treasures.   (That middle picture is not from the mid 1800's but has lots of fun prints.)

If you have seen my earlier lines, you may have noticed they are full of texture.  What is texture on a flat piece of cotton?  Printed texture...wools, streaks, rug hooking, old stain blobs, etc.  If I were going to use the antique fabrics for a new line, I definitely wanted texture added to the old designs.  I’m inspired by texture everywhere and find myself snapping pictures when I come across unique texture.  Sometimes from cracks on a floor or wall, architectural sculptures, wood, countertops or clothing textures like sweaters or different weaves.  As my collection of fabric and texture pictures grew, they were mixed up and combined, added to with doodles here and there and voila!  Abby's Treasures came to be! I am very grateful for the team I work with at Blank Quilting Corporation who hear my wishes and see my vision when I send in an idea and bring it to life!  Each print is a special little treasure... I couldn't do it without them!

When you take a look, you see what looks like reproduction fabrics with added touches of texture with rich tones of earthy colors for any season.  I loved working with these prints on a new quilt called Nana's Garden Club, available next spring after a special teaching event.  Watch for updates and the finish of this beauty.

I've added a few fabrics from my other lines and a few of other fabrics I have on hand that fit the style.  And I am brought back to what inspires me when I design fabrics...beautiful quilts.  This one isn't an antique, but it will be some day.  It inspires me to get the next collection finalized- I can't wait to show you what's coming next!

Abby's Treasures will be in your local quilt shops in December.  If you like what you see, please let your local shop know to get this collection ordered before it is sold out!  Details can be found by clicking HERE to be taken to Blank Quilting Corporation's website.  You'll also see a free quilt pattern using Abby's Treasures in the link above.  Each block a treasure of its own.

As always, thanks for taking time to stop by today and read about what inspires me!

Stay well and Take Care,

Missie

A Busy Week!

Ahhh, it's always good to wake and have a tall cup of coffee the morning after a busy week, isn’t it?

As mentioned in my last post, the Woolen Oak Mystery Stitch-A-Long Group on FB is rolling right along.  Another week finished and this coming week is my turn to release a FREE block for this stitch along!  We offered pre-sales on kits and got them all ready to ship out early so it took us a bit of time to make sure all was ready.  My block will be available tomorrow, Aug. 1st so be sure to click HERE and join the group to get all the FREE downloads. It's been so much fun to see so many blocks completed, each and every one unique and darling!

Jeff and I did a little happy dance after learning how to print labels in quick fashion!  Haha!  It was my biggest fear I will admit!  I am so thankful for those in the Stitch Along who trusted in us enough to pre order the kits, site unseen.  ❤️  Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.   We have our middle daughter and her husband here with us this weekend and it was nice to have their help getting everything into the post office on time.  Thanks "Kids"!

With no shows to go to, I’m thoroughly enjoying getting the quilts out of the suitcase and hanging them in our home.   It was Rustic Wedding's turn yesterday.  Honestly, I don’t remember if this quilt has ever had the pleasure of hanging in our home for us to enjoy for more than a day!  It is a special quilt because I was inspired by the happy couple above because their wedding was rustic in style.  It always makes me think of their beautiful wedding.  You can see it is a wedding ring block in the center of the quilt with floral Applique accents.  This quilt is layered cotton and wool which adds a bit of extra interest and texture.  The printed cotton applique shape which is under the wool appliqué add a hint of  curiosity from viewers at show and the comment is "What is it that looks so different about this quilt?"  We usually chat for a while and eventually it is decided they are seeing the interest added from the cotton applique layer in the wedding ring blocks.  When it comes to wool appliqué, this little tid bit of layered applique is what I’m known for.  You can see the prime example in the quilt, Pennies In My Garden on the website HERE.  Once on the website, hold your mouse over these quilts and you will see them up close for detail.

Have a blessed day and as always, thank you for stopping by!
Take care, Missie
PS...with the mention of no shows to attend this year, I welcome you to take a peek at all the goodies on the website and help us empty this house a bit!  😉  We are filled to the rafters with merchandise and no place to offer it to quilters!  Know someone who is missing shopping?  I invite you to share my post so they may feel the need to check out my website to help us with our problem in the house right now!  😂🤣😂

Where Has The Time Gone?!?

Posted by Missie Carpenter on Jul 24th 2020
Wow!  Is it possible that 2020 is more than half over already?!?  I can’t believe what a year it has been.  We started off with a bang at the Road to California Show, then The Rusty Barn Show in Phoenix, a quick stop at home and out to Virginia for the Mid Atlantic Quilt Festival and the Academy of Appliqué.  And then the pandemic got ahold of our country, we has a grand baby born in the midst of it and we've been working from home since March.  Wow, what a year with many ups and downs, cancellations, sadness and joy.
After returning from VA we were able to self quarantine for 2 weeks to make sure we were clean and healthy in order to meet our new granddaughter Kenzie.  She is now 4 months old and brings so much joy!  Here she is with her Mama- such a happy baby- and I could say the same about her Mama!  We are so blessed and thankful to be well.
With our time spent at home so much now, I’ve enjoyed the slower pace we've had due to no shows.  (Even though we have missed the shows terribly!).  Slow stitching has returned and I’ve been working on a few projects I will be able to share with you very soon.  I was able to use some of my previous 3 lines of fabrics with Blank Quilting- Ginger & Spice, Rustic Homestead and Barn Dance along with some strike off's of my 4th and next line Abby's Treasures!  Barn Dance should be in your local quilt shop now and they may have a bit of Rustic Homestead left to sell as well!  If they are sold out at your local shop, I do have some left.  I have plans of adding what I have on hand to my website soon, but if you can’t find it in a shop, please contact me through my website and we can figure out what you need.    ( TraditionalPrimitives.com )

Barn Dance is so fun and festive.  Available in fat quarter bundles!
Abby's Treasures will be shipped to stores in December.  It's my favorite collection to date!  Please share this news with your local shop to make sure they have it on order.
We must do our best to focus on the good things in life and stay as healthy as we can.  I hope you are all well!  Stay well and thank you so much for stopping by today!

News from the Past Few Months!

Hi Gang!
It's been a while since I've had time to post, but I have been very busy indeed.  Since my last post about teaching in my hometown of Springfield, MO, we had a great time in class!  I was so thrilled that all the students loved the techniques taught, and they did an Awesome job!  Merrily We Quilt Along has an exceptional classroom and knows how to put on a good show for sure!!  If you are ever in the area be sure to stop in and so some shopping.  They have a great selection of fabrics and notions of all styles- a little something for everyone!  They are right off Sunshine and 65 so they are very easy to get to.  Last I checked they had a little Rustic Homestead, my second fabric line, left in stock, so be sure to check it out!!  They made the nicest display...💕

Speaking of fabric lines by yours truly, I do have another line called Barn Dance which is being sold to stores now.  Click HERE to see the fabrics up close and personal and be sure to let your local shop know it's time to order now so you can purchase it next May!  Your local shop can call Blank Quilting direct or reach out to their sales rep to place the order.

The colors are rich and will make a great quilt, or two or more! I love these rich tones for mixing up in a scrappy quilt, how about you??

I can't wait to get it in my hands...gotta make something pretty pretty!

Other exciting news is I will be returning to teach at The Academy of Applique' in Williamsburg, VA in early March!  You can check out the classes I'm offering by clicking HERE.   Then click on 2020 classes.  Wait for it to load, as it can take a while.  My classes are shown a few pages into the document.  I only have a few spots left and the sign up deadline is Jan 15, so Hurry Hurry and decide to join me!  I will teach you some advanced applique techniques as well as get you started on my EPP techniques.  The projects are a block for a new quilt, Coeur d'Alene shown below...

I am so thrilled in the look of this beautiful block as I make more blocks to have it down perfect for you when you take the workshop.  The block shown above will be for the workshop and I'll reveal the full sized quilt with 9 blocks at the Academy.  I can't wait to show you!  Won't you come and join so you can see it in person?

And several blocks and advanced techniques for The Gardens Of A King, which you should already know about if you have followed me for a while!  If you are new here, take a peek on my website at TraditionalPrimitives.com in the English Paper Piecing section.  This quilt is still very popular and I love teaching these difficult looking blocks in a way that makes them go together like magic.  You will learn a lot if you attend!

The experience of going to the Academy of Applique is so wonderful!  You'll be surrounded by those who love applique' as much as you do!!  The location is stunning and there is so much history all around to explore and learn from.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  I would love to have you join me so I can help you become better at Applique'!  I have tips and tricks to make difficult projects easier-I promise!!  Don't forget, the deadline is approaching fast so act quick to save your spot!!

More exciting news is that Jeff and I are expecting our first granddaughter in March!  Paxton is such a joy and makes our hearts so full, but we are so very excited to welcome another into our world.  I've been told for so long the love of a grandparent is special and we know how special it actually is now!  Here's a little collage of the afternoon they found out we will be loving on a "SHE" this time around!

In October the Winter issue of Primitive Quilts and Projects was released and I happen to have a quilt in this issue called Winter Blooms!  This magazine is one of my favorites and this issue is quite stunning!  My quilt is inspired by the first blooms we see popping up through the winter snow in late winter... a little old snow with bursts of color greeting us with a smile for Spring!  We have kits and the magazine available on the WEBSITE on the Books and Magazines tab!  They won't last long so grab one while you can.

Recently, I was quite surprised to learn that my quilt, English Wedding was put on the cover of  the winter issue #134 of Quiltmania!  I was so thrilled and quite honored!  A dream come true...
We have just restocked kits for this and we do have the magazine in stock if you are interested.  You will find it on the English Paper Piecing tab as well as the Books and Magazines tab on the website at TraditionalPrimitives.com .

My last bit of excitement is that we have finally launched our new website!  It has the same web address at TraditionalPrimitives.com  but it looks so much better than my old site.  It works well for mobile devices or computers and we are so happy about that!  Take some time to look around and please let me know what you think!!  I hope you like it!

As always, thanks for stopping by my blog today!
Take Care,
Missie
